For most, no! We do not intend for our visitors to be scared during their visit. All areas are well-lit with both natural and stage lighting – no jump-scares nor grotesque imagery, either!
Any of our visitors who are scared by the cells find a welcome release on the upper floors – the brisk winds and open air of tower and exercise yard blow away any spooks!
However, as the winter evenings creep in – even with our stage lights – the Jail certainly has an ambience. Although they’re not necessary, feel free to bring a torch or two. During these times, we can provide glow-sticks for wee ones, and the promise of a treat upon their brave departure.
You can find us on St John Street, half-way up the hill between the City Centre and Stirling Castle – just keep an eye out for the Visitor Information Centre! We’re right next door to the SYHA Hostel and across from Tolbooth Theatre.
We are renowned for our live action performance tours and are pleased to confirm that these have now returned – we find guests returning year after year with new friends and family members to engage in our history and be entertained by us.
Yes! We have free visitor parking at the Jail. The main gates close at 6pm during the summer season, and 5pm during the rest of the year. If you’re booked in for a late tour or Escape Room, just give us a call and we can unlock and lock the gates for you.
A Castle ticket won’t get you entry to the Old Town Jail, but the Stirling City Pass includes both of these attractions and the National Wallace Monument. In addition, the Pass gets you a discount on the Stirling GhostWalk and Old Town Tour, saving you a criminal amount of money for your stay.
Yes – we would recommend booking in advance to avoid waiting time, and if you download the app you won’t have to wait for a handset. We have 14 tour start times a day, so there are plenty of opportunities to see the Jail.
A benefit of our performance audio tours is that we can fit to your schedule – most people take between 45 and 90 minutes, and you are welcome to wander for as long or little as you please.
The Ground Floor is accessible and provides access to disabled toilet facilities. There’s a small step (less than one inch) into each cell. Our Top Floor and Observation Tower, however, are unfortunately not accessible. Victorian prisons, sadly, were not built with mobility in mind!
We try to make the Jail experience a pleasant one for ALL ages. The building is well-lit, we don’t use any jump-scares and there’s nothing gruesome. We can provide fearful wee ones with glow-sticks, and the promise of a prize on their brave departure.
