Established in 1847, Stirling Old Town Jail was Scotland’s last reformed prison of the Victorian era, aiming to emphasize education, training, and rehabilitation. Despite these noble intentions, challenges such as cost-cutting and political shifts led to a resurgence of strict discipline. The facility later served as Scotland’s sole Military Detention Barracks from 1888 until its closure in 1935.
